The Cost Desk

Project costs

Pick a project

Each page adds up wages, shelf prices and contractor overhead, then shows you the range and the sources.

How to read these pages

Each project page shows a typical cost and a planning range for a standard job at the US average. The range is wide on purpose: it runs from every low assumption to every high one, because the same job costs different amounts in different towns and from different crews.

The size and the state are inputs, so the figures move as they change. Wages come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, prices from store shelves, and anything we are guessing is marked as an estimate. How the numbers are built.
